Personal Development

Our personal development provision is carefully designed to nurture confident, respectful and resilient pupils who are well prepared for life in modern Britain. Through a structured programme of PSHE, underpinning core values and whole-school SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development, pupils explore themes such as belonging, relationships, health, aspirations and personal safety. Each half term focuses on a key value, such as race, disability, socio‑economic understanding, LGBTQ+ awareness, religion and gender, ensuring that learning is progressive, inclusive and reflective of the diverse world in which our pupils live.

Our curriculum is enriched by a wide range of meaningful experiences that bring personal development to life. Weekly assemblies, themed weeks and national and international awareness days promote understanding, empathy and respect. Pupils engage with important topics including mental health, equality, anti‑bullying, and global citizenship, often linked to real-world events such as International Day of Peace, Children’s Mental Health Week and World Environment Day. These opportunities are enhanced through music, storytelling and discussion, helping pupils to connect emotionally with key messages and deepen their understanding of diversity and inclusion.

We place a strong emphasis on developing positive relationships, wellbeing and character. Our PSHE programme supports pupils to manage their emotions, build friendships, stay safe and develop healthy lifestyles, while also encouraging ambition and perseverance. Dedicated initiatives such as “Sunshine Week” and safeguarding themes further reinforce kindness, self-esteem and pupil voice. Together, these carefully planned experiences ensure that every child feels valued, develops a strong sense of identity and leaves our school as a thoughtful, informed and responsible member of society.
